Actor: Errol Flynn

The Adventures of Robin Hood

One of the oldest and most famous movies around Robin Hood. It is probably the most idealistic movie about this legend. Because of being made in 1935, the quality of sound and backround etc. is not as perfect as today.

Gist: Richard the Lionhearted, returning from the Holy Land, is caught by an enemy, Leopold of Austria. His brother, Prince John, terrorizes all poor Saxons of England with (too) high taxes and to hard punishments if you cannot pay. The Saxon Earl Robin of Locksley leaves all his possessions for saving the poor and oppressed. His hide is the great forest Sherwood Forest. When he gets to know that Prince John stays in Nottingham at a great feast, he visits this feast. He also gets to know the beautiful Norman Lady Marian Fitzwalter and he falls in love.

At the feast, Robin explains that he will fight against everything which could help the Prince and the Norman Earl Sir Guy of Gisbourne becomes his greatest enemy. Returned to Sherwood, Robin collects all people who where treated bad and together they swear to fight against this injustice. Later, a treck with taxes (and Sir Guy of Gisbourne, Lady Marian and Sheriff of Nottingham) is robbed. Robin and Marian talk a long time and Mariangets to know more about the real situation of Saxons and Normans in England.

The Sheriff of Nottingham realizes that Robin loves Marian and so he has a evil plan:There will be a great bow competition in Nottingham and Marian has to give the price to the victor. So he hopes, Robin will come and win - and they can catch him. Robin really comes, wins and is caught. Marian helps the other outlaws to free their master and realizes, too, that she loves Robin.

Marian promises Robin to send him informations about the king. Few time later, Prince John gets to know that King Richard returned and he wants him to kill. Marian listen to this plan and when she tries to send a message to Robin, Sir Guy of Gisbourne catchs her.

Her mother - friend Beth warns the outlaws about her sweetheart Much. Much kills the murderer (who should assassinate king Richard) while king Richard visits Robin in Sherwood. Together they fight against Prince John, Robin kills Sir Guy and frees Marian. In the end, king RIchard makes him to "Sir" Robin of Loxley and he marries Marian.

I like this movies because you really have the feeling that Errol Flynn has much fun to play a greendressed hero who can jump from tree to rock and back. But it's very hard to believe in the story around... that Prince John really was so evil and king Richard so good etc.
